MEMORABLE COMBOS 2 : Karthik & Harris Jayaraj

Assumption - Whenever I've mentioned chords, I've assumed the C-scale ..

Hello everyone & welcome to the 2nd part of "Memorable Combos" !! :)

.The 1st part threw some light on my favorite combo : Harris Jayaraj & Bombay Jayashree ...This time, it is all about Harris & his favorite male singer - Karthik..

Karthik, who made a sensational entry into Tamil playback singing by being a regular for AR Rahman, was most noticed by his couple of songs for Superstar Rajinikanth's "Baba" ..."Maaya maaya" & "Sakthi kodu" became runaway hits...he soon followed it up with roaring chartbusters from "Boys"..

I don't want my inherent craze for Harris make this series sound like an exclusive Harris-singers combo one...So here's a heads up - My next post in this series will be about the Yuvan-Simbhu combo :) ...

After Karthik's contribution to the mammoth of all Harris' albums - Minnale, it was a bit of a slow start for Karthik & Harris, with some not-so-memorable songs (again, not bad songs..but definitely not of the standards of the Harris-Karthik LEAGUE that is known today), but then "Aval ulaga azhagiye" from Lesa Lesa happened... & since then, until "Yaro yaro" from Maatraan, there has been ABSOLUTELY no looking back. A Harris album is almost always NOT a Harris album without a song by Karthik :) ...Karthik has been more or less indispensable for Harris ( 100% indispensable for the Surya-Harris combo) & it has pretty much been vice-versa too - most of Karthik's greatest hits have come from the Harris factory :) ...Both bring the best out of each other :) ..In any Harris album, unless there is a Bombay Jayashree song, the Karthik song is the first one everyone listens to...and it almost always, doesn't disappoint anyone :) ...because the combo usually creates nothing short of magic :) ...

Karthik's voice has more or less become the identity of a "perfect playback" voice in today's generation of singers ...Many other voices are, IMO, influenced by his - Naresh Iyer & Haricharan , noticeably...So let's straightaway have a look at the songs he's sung for Harris, most of which are his best ones :) ....This is gonna be a LONG, LONG list :) ...

1. Maddy Maddy ( Minnale )

Wikipedia says that Karthik is one of the singers of this MASTERPIECE of an intro ...though I always believed it was directors Gautham Menon & C S Amudhan who sang this one...

Nevertheless, this has got to be one of the greatest pieces of intro music of all time ...This bit wasn't a part of the original soundtrack ...but included later on, due to public demand ...This is what you call as THE EPITOME OF A *ROCKING* INTRO ...The metal guitars work to perfection in this one, along with the thumping rhythm...soon joined by the fargo-like tune, which is what elevates this song from super-awesome to extraordinarily-hyper-awesome :) :)...

2. Poopol Poopol ( Minnale )

When you see a beautiful girl & you fall for her at first sight ...this is the first song which will come to your mind....NEVER EVER has love at first sight began in such an AWESOME, MIND-BLOWING manner ..this opening sequence is far better than any fantasy man would've dreamed of ....

The flute has rarely ever been used to create such a haunting tune...which still lingers in the minds of every music-lover even a decade after its release, like it was yesterday ...this will ALWAYS be fresh ...& will never grow old :) ....This accompanied by the sound of the guitar string...& finally the part which ENSURES the haunting feel, one which would go on to be the most prominent part of all Harris melodies - the synth-pad :)....this song has C-minor & G-minor ...alternately progressing & finally reaches the crescendo, where the flute goes into the higher octave.....that completes this package which GUARANTEES addiction, constant reminiscing and instant playback whenever a beautiful girl walks into your life out of nowhere ...& in particular ...strikes like lightning ....:)

This conveys the perfect feeling it supposed to - how a guy feels when an angel walks into his life ..like in fairytales....this song instantly takes you away to a dreamy, fairytale land....where you imagine yourself witnessing a beautiful girl walk into your life ...

3. Hari Gori ( Majnu )

Strange as it may seem, I never heard this song, until today ...On first hearing, it is a good song...didn't come across as "awesome"...which most Harris songs usually are...But again, not bad ....I won't get into much detail with this one ..because Karthik's voice is hardly prominent ...

4. Oru Paarvai ( 12 B )

12 B was a hugely successful album, but this short 2-minute piece pretty much went unnoticed ( Just IMO that's all ..I never noticed this song...it failed to catch my attention ) ....due to sky-rocketing successes of Sariya Thavara, Love Pannu, Mutham Mutham, Jothi Neranjava & last but not the least, Poove vaai pesumbodhu ....These songs completely overshadowed this 2-minute piece ....which again, is good...but just not as awesome as the other songs ...My personal favorite in this album is Sariya Thavara :)......So this is perhaps, Karthik's first solo number for HJ ...A good start, but doesn't match the awesomeness this combo is known for, today...

5. Vaale vaale ( Vasu )

This is more or less a short cameo by Karthik ...SPB does most of the male singing ...To be frank ..this song never really fascinated me...I mainly used to watch this song to ogle at Bhumika Chawla :D :P ...She's HOT !! :P ...Anyways, this is a perfect village song ...we HARDLY EVER hear such songs from HJ these days...I think the last time we heard such songs from Harris ..was from the movie Arul ...

If I'm not wrong, Karthik sings a short piece of gibberish in the middle ..and is never to be heard again in the song :) ..so can't describe much about this one, really ....

6. Aval ulaga Azhagiye ( Lesa Lesa )

This is considered as one of Harris' greatest compositions ever....This is the song which started the Harris-Karthik league ...a standard of excellence, a standard of brilliance, a benchmark for chartbusters ...The song couldn't have sounded sweeter! Only Karthik could've made this song as appealing as it is ....you literally melt on listening to his voice !!

The rhythm & strings orchestra kinda gives you the feel of ARR's "Gala gala" from "Rhythm" ...but it ends there :) ...Karthik's voice takes over ...& takes care of the "magic" department ...it is even more delightful when his harmony overlaps in the 2nd chorus ....The veena-flute interlude is awesome...Violin too, along with Mridangam...forms a significant part of this song ...

But IMO, Yedho Ondru & Muthal Muthalai took away the cake ..in this movie :) ...Aval Ulaga Azhagiye is #3, according to me :)....I somehow find myself listening to the 1st 2 every other day :) ...

7. Collegeukku povom ( Kovil )

I always thought Kaaka Kaaka released before Kovil ..but Wikipedia says otherwise ...so I shall go with it & describe the songs in Kovil first ...

This is a wonderful opening song....not the power-packed, punch-packed intro you expect for big heroes ...but apt for the movie & its village setting - a simple, laid-back, sluggish ..in other words, A JOLLY opening song ...& not a powerful one ...emoting very nicely the joyfulness & "jolly"ness of village life ...

The female humming interlude is brilliant ...trademark Harris stuff ...when I first saw the trailer of Kovil ...I listened to this humming & I guessed immediately that it was Harris for this movie :) :) ...and what better voice than Karthik's to provide the "jolly" ...neither bland, nor powerful feeling ...Again, this is a song which only Karthik or Tippu could've done justice to ...I bet Tippu would've sung this one well too ...but there's this youthfulness component which is an integral part of Karthik's voice ...whereas Tippu's voice is somehow more suited towards macho heroes IMO...as opposed to young lover boys...Tippu's voice has more or less unmatched power....Karthik's has unmatched youthfulness....so it was a wise choice, choosing Karthik for this one :) ...

8. Puyale Puyale ( Kovil )

This is a nice song ...but one that I'm not a huge fan of ( except for the part that Sonia Agarwal looks hot :P ) ...
But this song has quite a few re-used elements ...For e.g, the rhythm is quite similar to the one in ARR's "Thenmerku Paruvakaatru" from "Karuthamma"....but that's okay ...rhythms are hardly ever unique....& can be reused ...that is allowed, IMO ...if one were to accuse someone of plagiarism on basis of rhythm, every song in the world will be copied from some other song :) ..unless, the bass pattern is also similar ..you really can't accuse a song on basis of rhythm ...

Let me come to the tune ...the chorus tune is a somewhat, expanded version of the 3rd line of Mudhar Kanave ( the line with which Harish Raghavendra makes his entry in the song...sing "Mudhar Kanave" from that line a bit slowly & then sing Puyale Puyale ...you'll know what I'm talking about :) ) ..Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to decimate Harris here with such comparisons ...I'm saying - a true Harris fan knows & accepts that he reuses tunes, knows exactly which part he reuses from which song ..& yet overlooks all that & loves & enjoys the music :) ...Anyway, reusing tunes is another debate altogether ..it's not Harris alone who does it ...ARR, Yuvan, GV ..everybody recycles their tunes at some point or the other :) ..it is inevitable :) ...

Anyway, back to this song ..the starting is a little annoying I must say ...But it all falls in place once Karthik starts singing ...he tries singing powerfully, but his voice is too sweet ...hehe ...his attempt is adorable! Giving him good company in this song is Mahathi ...

9. Oru Ooril ( Kaaka Kaaka )

Here we are - the 2nd song in the HJ-Karthik league, after Aval Ulaga Azhagiye ...Brilliant song, retains the 12-B flavor ( as in "Love Pannu", "Mutham mutham" ) ...this falls into the sub-genre of HJs "sweet" songs ...this isn't a haunting melody which one would get addicted to ( Uyirin Uyire takes care of that :) ) ...this is a song which anyone will feel like humming when in a happy, jolly mood :) ...

Harris is at his versatile best in the songs when he restricts his usage of minor chords & uses major chords liberally :) ...This song is one example of that :) ...For the large part, Aval Ulaga Azhagiye is also largely a major-chord based song :)...Such songs are HJs answer to those doubting his versatility :)....I will point out more HJ-Karthik songs in the "major chord" category as and when we hit them in this list :)...

Anyway...this is a really good song...Karthik really owns this :)..."Sweet" songs are ENTIRELY his terrority...he is he absolute emperor of sweet songs...he is really the perfect, well-shaped voice of urban, informal youth :)....the interludes are awesome :) especially the 2nd one....but this song is still Rank #4 in this album IMO :) ... 1. Uyirin Uyire 2. Thoodhu Varuma 3. Ennai Konjam Maatri ...and then this one :) ...I can't help it !! The first three are just too super-awesome :D...It is no wonder that Kaaka Kaaka is considered by many as Harris' second-best album after Minnale...& his best, by many :) ...This is THE album which proved that Minnale was no fluke ...& that Harris was INDEED a strong challenge to ARR :) ....

10. Buddhan ( Arasatchi )

This is the first time Harris has attempted a rendition of a shloka ...Karthik begins with a shloka ...before it takes off into a typical Harris-style action-packed thriller BGM ....his humming in the middle is super-awesome, followed by a series of racy percussion...and his humming repeats again !!! .....Nevertheless, the one song that stood out from this album was "Oh Muhalai" ...

Nevertheless, this is one of the most unique themes by Harris ...one really craves for such unique stuff from him these days !!

11. Uyire En Uyire ( Thotti Jaya )

I've already described this one in Memorable Combos 1

Nevertheless, this is the second one in the category of Harris-Karthik's "sweet songs" ( largely based on major chords )...Songs like these are the ones that elevate Harris further & further, to previously un-scaled levels of brilliance :)

12. Kanavugal ( Ullam Ketkume )

In this one, we're back to a typical Harris song, as is obvious from the starting itself - a couple of lines hummed in the F-minor -> C-minor progression...that aside, it is loaded with oodles of Harris gibberish, or as most singers like to call it - "Harrish"....

This song is one of the most peppy songs of Harris & easily the most energetic one in the movie ...it is highly difficult to not get hooked on to the chorus - "Ulla le le...Ulla le le....le" ...Harris has this brilliant knack of providing UNBELIEVABLE interludes at many of his songs...which is what take them up to the levels much higher than they otherwise deserve - Example, the violin interlude in "Unakkul Naane" ...take it out of the song & it SURELY isn't as magical as it is :)...the veena interlude in "Uyirin Uyire"...The sax interlude in "Anbe en Anbe" ( & in many other HJ songs )...

Likewise, there's a sax interlude which leaves you dizzy when you listen to it blazing away at the fast tempo...before we get to the "laiku laima" gibberish ...

Anyway, coming to Karthik's voice in this song ...it is easily the most prominent ...Like I said earlier, there is this UNBELIEVABLE energy in Karthik's voice ...which REALLY REALLY makes you feel like he's a teenager ...This song is supposed to be depicting a college campus environment & who better than the most youthful singer around !!?? :) ....This song's an absolute winner, but for the slight overdose of C-minor & F-minor chords...

13. Oru Maalai ( Ghajini )

NOW WE'RE TALKING !!!! :)

This SENSATIONAL CHART-BUSTER ...is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT SONGS IN KARTHIK'S CAREER ..FOR SURE ....aside from the fact that it is another sky-rocketing hit from the hit machine called "Harris" :) ...

Despite being a minor-chord centered song soaked in Harris' trademark Cm, Fm & Gm chords, this is one of those unbelievably awesome compositions of Harris which is adored by fans of other rival music directors as well....There is a lot of appregio & amazing bass accompanying there rhythm....the striking of the chords is highly prominent.........Suttum Vizhi Chudare might've swept away all the awards ...but even today, if you see any reality show, there's HARDLY EVER ONE where an aspiring singer doesn't this song ...

Karthik's voice reaches UNBELIEVABLE ranges & energy levels in the charanams....He has TOTALLY NAILED this one....If ever there was a synonym for "maanga adi". ..it would be this ...Karthik totally OWNS this one ...No matter how many decades pass by, this shall ALWAYS be ONE OF HIS GREATEST SONGS EVER !! :) :) ...

This HAS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, GOT TO BE THERE IN THE TOP 3 SONGS OF THE HARRIS-KARTHIK COMBO :) ...

I'll come to my top 3 in the end :)

14. Orugalukke Pilla ( Syenikudu )

This song is infamous for being similar to AR Rahman's evergreen legendary chartbuster Chaiyya chaiyya ( but the similarity is largely in rhythm though ).....Anyways, Karthik doesn't have much of a role in this song ..

IMO, this isn't a great one from Harris ...it is more or less average I would say...It gets into the REAL HJ mode in the charanams...but then again, this is the kinda song that makes you feel - "Oh God ..when is it gonna get over?!" ...

This one's an average song...the other songs in Syenikudu are better IMO :)

15. Karu Karu Vizhigalaal ( Pachaikili Muthucharam )

I have hardly ever seen a song in Tamil Cinema that is SO ENERGETIC ...but I was disappointed on coming to know that this is strongly similar to a song by Westlife...( I did hear it and sadly, the rhythms are LARGELY similar )....

Nevertheless, due credit to the singers for doing their best ...Karthik's energy is UNBELIEVABLE in this song...

If plagiarism / inspiration doesn't spoil your mood of listening to the song, then you HAVE to listen to this one :) ..YOU WILL LOVE IT !! :) .....A largely appregio-based rhythm, the tempo is super-fast and it is HIGHLY energizing :)

16. Unnaale Unnaale ( Unnaale Unnaale )

WAH !! :) :) ...There's a HUGE SMILE on my face as I'm about to describe this one ...& I'm unable to resist the temptation to listen to this one, DROWN myself in its feel ...& hum along every word :) :) ....It is soaked in minor chords & the typical Harris feel .....& another drawback is the SLIGHT similarity of the starting ( Mudhal Mudhalaaga ) to AR Rahman's chorus in "Kannodu Kaanbadhellam" ( Thaka thaka thaka dhim )....it probably won't strike you unless you're DIE-HARD fans of both :)........but yet, I bet, even Harris haters will get psyched out in trying to figure out why they just can't get this song out of their heads ...or can't stop crooning it !!! :) :)...

I am NOT kidding when I saw that the super-awesome success of this super-duper hit song ...is one of THE MAIN reasons for the popularity of this film ...The film as such isn't great by itself ...It can SAFELY be said that Harris is the REAL hero of this film :) ...

June Pona is a crowd favorite too....but not mine, ever since I realized its undeniable similarity to Blue's "All Rise"...This fact just spoils my mood each time I even wanna listen to this song ...

Anyways, Unnaale Unnaale is an ABSOLUTE HELL OF A WINNER ALL THE WAY :) :) ...Again, Harris completely allows Karthik to OWN this song ...& MAGICALLY shape it up in his inimitable way ...A SONG FULL OF LIFE, FULL OF LOVE ...FULL OF YOUTHFULNESS - SIMPLY THE PERFECT SETTING for Karthik to come and EFFORTLESSLY dominate the proceedings :) :)..........Krish & Harini do their part well too :)...

EASILY, WITHOUT A DOUBT, UNDENIABLY ...ONE OF THE VERY BEST OFFERINGS OF HARRIS-KARTHIK ....AN EVERGREEN, FOREVER MEMORABLE SONG :) :)....

17. Chamakuro ( Munna )

Vocals-wise, this is a great song for Karthik....he has completely allowed himself freely to swim in the feel of the song & has done a wonderful job....but the sad part is the tune that reeks of familiarity ...it is a little too evident that it suffers from the hangover of "Kannum kannum nokia" from Anniyan...

So there's nothing spectacular about this song that can be written or described ...A notable fact, however, that this perhaps remains the ONLY song where India's ace rapper Blaaze and Harris have collaborated....that too, for a pretty disappointing set of lines that look lost in the middle of the song...

This one, is at best, a forgettable song from Harris ...When one hits this song in the middle of a random shuffle on his Ipod ...he is most likely to switch over to the next song....

Great singing by Karthik ...but a very unattractive song...

18. Siru Paarvayaale ( Bheema )

This is an awesome duet by Karthik and Harini ...& overall, a very feel-good, jolly, hummable song ...The first two lines of the starting santoor reek of familiarity a bit, but the way it continues from there is awesome ...

Nothing extraordinary about this one ...just another nice, enjoyable song from Harris ..this is typical Harris stuff & absolutely Karthik's piece of cake....broadly exposing the feel-good factor at every single second of the song......Also, Trisha looks hawt in this one :P ...

The noticeable thing in this song is the Arabic influence ..music-wise as well as the gibberish-humming wise ...it gives a completely Arabic feel to the song ....

19. Anjala ( Vaaranam Aayiram )

Another wide, heart-warming smile, unfortunately, as I'm about the describe this sad song :) ..Well, there is no one who doesn't know this song ...Let alone mine, in ANYONE's list of top songs of the Harris-Karthik combo, this song is AN ABSOLUTE MUST !!

It is SHEER MAGIC ....First of all, this is one of the most unique songs, simply because it has been until date, the ONLY "koothu" song in a Gautham Menon film ...and the situation, the picturization of this song ..everything is SO PERFECT in the movie !!! This is TOTALLY UNLIKE the soup songs we see these days, where the blame goes on the girl :P ( Like Venaam macha venaam from OKOK) .....One REALLY FEELS the sadness of losing his loved one ..in this song ....Brilliant lyrics!

This is one of Karthik's most different songs ...He has always sung peppy numbers and melodies ...This one is totally out of his comfort zone ...Kudos to him for stepping out !! Coming to the song ...well, starts of with a koothu drum beat.....it is an amazing start ...making one think about a funeral procession ....not the one that gets your foot tapping ...its a perfect song to drown all your sorrows !!!

So after a few repetitions of the beat ...enters Karthik....and straightaway makes you dip yourself into a sea of sadness ...Mind you, it is highly challenging ..just a drum and his voice, without ANYTHING else ...to aid him...and he's STILL managed to get you to take a dip....after a repeat of the first few lines, when you're standing in the sea....when the lines "Ava onnukkulla onna" is where he makes you IMMERSE yourself into the sea of sadness....this time with a beat variation that gives a feeling of increased tempo, as well as a bass to give it a racy feel ...

This song is brilliant in that it has musical parts that convey sadness as well as frustration ...The rendering of the lines "ava onnukulla onna" perfectly conveys the frustration pent up...that is being released ...We HARDLY EVER see songs that are SO WELL IN CONTEXT with their films these days ...Many films these days are nonsensical and have songs inserted into them only because they have to play somewhere !!! But it is AMAZING, how much of THOUGHT goes behind the making of songs in Gautham Menon movies ..

Anyway, the first interlude is the same as that of the tune of the song ....before we get to the charanam....The charanam shifts the mood of the song from sadness and frustration to depression ...In the charanam, the way Karthik sings really gives a feeling of depression ...the pain of BEING UNABLE to think about ANYTHING ELSE other than the lost loved one...here's where the synth actually makes its entry into the song and sounds prominent - a welcome departure from Harris' regular songs....The charanam is one of Harris Jayaraj's BEST EVER tunes ...It takes a very emotional person to come up with such pieces of music ...and from this example, it is abundantly clear that Harris has an amazing understanding of human emotions ...Otherwise, to convey sadness, frustration, depression, clueless-ness all in a single song, really requires NOTHING LESS than a genius and a wizard ...

The 2nd interlude is OUT-OF-THE-WORLD ...The last time Harris Jayaraj did something like this was in "Venmathiye"... a warm, moving grand piano piece, with a choir joining ...The magic repeats here too...this time, with less of keyboard ...and the unparalleled humming of Prasanna ...( who took away the cake in Anbe en Anbe from Dhaam Dhoom and Mudhal Mazhai from Bheema ..esp. in the latter, with the "Mehu mehu mehu" humming )....the first couple of lines of the humming convey a sudden departure from depression into fantasy and dreams....the beauty and joy of being with the one you love the most.......the choir joins for a couple of lines....to make the feeling all the more heavenly......before reality snaps back .....the next couple of lines after the humming is PERFECTLY composed by Harris as well as rendered by Prasanna.....to give out this exact emotion of reality snapping back....IT IS SIMPLY MIND-BLOWING ...the way Gautham Menon works with his music directors ...

We can see the same intelligence even in the Gautham-ARR combo too ...."Anbil Avan" song from Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya ...the interlude of the church organ to depict a christian marriage ...and a SUPER-AWESOME, FANTASTICALLY EFFORTLESS transition into the nadaswaram interlude to depict a Hindu marriage....Can't wait to watch Neethaane En Ponvasantham! :) :) ...to see what Gautham and Illayaraja have churned out :) ...

Such level of thought in songs is HARDLY seen ...except, may be, in Mani Ratnam and Shankar movies...and more these days in others' songs as well, thanks to lyricists like Madhan Karky who write songs specific to each movie and just not throw in some random love lines....

So yes...the song maintains a depressive feel throughout before getting back to frustration mode ...and ends with peak anger in the end...with the words "Saale" being uttered with such fury !!!

Whew !! I guess this description is probably the longest of all :) ..but this definitely deserves a standing ovation at any cost ..simply because of its intricacy and complexity :)...it is a display of exemplary skill and effort :) :) ....This shall ALWAYS count in ANYONE's list as one of Harris Jayaraj's greatest songs ever !! :) ....and easily one of Karthik's best-ever songs, as far as his career is concerned ! :)

20. Vizhi Moodi ( Ayan )

We're back to the jolly, sing-along mood here ...this is EXACTLY the kinda song you'd wanna listen to ...on a warm evening, when it is raining as well as sunny....Anyway, this song is nothing extraordinary ..it is a routine, run-of-the-mill Harris Jayaraj song ...and once again, Karthik's own backyard - the jolly, feel-good romantic song ...

This song, like many other Harris songs, follows the Cm->Fm->A# M .....I felt that it is a little similar to "Siru Paarvayaale" ...not in terms of tune, but in terms of lyrics may be ...I mean, try singing Siru Paarvayaale with the tune of Vizhi Moodi ..."Siru Paarvaayale Poidhaai ennai vizhiye vizhiye" can perfectly replace "Vizhi Moodi Yosithal angeyum vandhaai munne munne" ...I dunno what you call this kinda similarity ...This sometimes happens in AR Rahman songs too - Pachaikiligal from Indian and Suthi suthi from Padayappa ...although there is a HUGE HINT of tune reuse as well over there ...

Anyways...when the chorus begins - Mazhai kizhiye ...that's where the Harris trademark synth begins as well....The good thing about this song is the beat, very different and very catchy ...and hardly any bass anywhere - that's a HUGE departure from Harris' regular songs ..and that has to be appreciated....

The first interlude with the mouth organ is very lovely to hear ...and ends with the guitars....after which begins the charanam ...it begins on a really good note ....the keyboard bits accompanying the next couple of lines are also awesome ....but what spoiled it for me ...were the lines - "Indha Kadhal vandhuvittaal...Indha Dhegam Midhandhidume" ...these 2 lines reminded me straightaway of the saxophone interlude in "Anbe en anbe" from "Dhaam Dhoom" ....the first couple of notes in the saxophone interlude, when the female humming also joins along with the sax tune ....is exactly the same as these lines in Vizhi Moodi ...I've mentioned this in other posts of mine ...that's the sad part of being a Harris ADDICT :) ...You'll easily figure out which part is reused from where ...and that kinda spoils the song temporarily ...before the feel of the song takes over and makes you overlook these things :) :)....

Anyways, the female humming in this song too...is awesome..and very well suited....An absolute chart-buster of a song ..at the end of it all :) :) ....

21. Hasili Fisili ( Aadhavan )

Another wide smile on my face as I sing this one :) ....One of the catchiest songs of Harris ever ...
This was a rather unwanted film in Surya's as well as Harris' career - really, Surya didn't need to do a masala-filled Vijay-style movie ...nor did Harris need to waste his precious music for such an average film...

Nevertheless, this album is where people felt a bit tired of the Harris-Surya combo...it was like a BIT of an overdose ...I had seen even Harris fans wanting a break for this combo ...Nevertheless, as an album...Aadhavan is not a masterpiece by Harris....barring Hasili Fisili & Vaaraayo Vaaraayo ...there's no other song that is really memorable in this movie ...Masi masi is a good experiment, but not really one that people would feel like listening to...the very thought of this movie reminds of THE WORST PICTURIZATION EVER - Vaaraayo vaarayo ...it is one of Harris' BEST-EVER compositions ...but ended up with an absolutely TERRIBLE video...:((((((((

Anyways, Hasili Fisili is another groovy, typical Harris song....and no wonder, it became a sensational hit....It is not just jolly like most Harris songs ...this one is more groovy, with some awesome rap by Dr.Burn...The starting itself is uber-stylish ..when Dr.Burn begins rapping Anbe unnaal manam freezing ...When the guitars & bass begin ..it is AWESOME - I have hardly ever seen better starts to the groove ...The female rap is awesome too ...this song has one of THE BEST usages of gibberish by Harris :) :) ...

The chords are the same - Cm, Fm, A# M for the main lines ...however, the bass is superb in this one...the bass is what makes the song as groovy as it is ...accompanied by acoustic guitars ...this one is an absolute winner by Harris ...This song is absolutely the best synonym for CATCHY :) ...One can't get away from the charm of this song ...it will catch you and will be stuck in your head at least for a few days :)

The female rap in the first interlude is SUPERFAST ..AND SUPERAWESOME :) ...and especially when Karthik's humming also adds to it ...The charanam tune is AMAZING ...until these lines - "nee ennai theendinaai veppama, naan unakku pookalin uppuma"...here's where familiarity creeps in - the trademark Harris style / superstition / tradition of using the Fm->Cm progression just as the interlude is about to get over ...But again, the feel of the song overawes you and makes you overlook these things :) :)....

The 2nd interlude has a brilliant feel to it - the absence of all groovy orchestration, just the chords in synth...with a haunting flute playing ...before it awesomely transitions into groovy rap again, with Dr.Burn stepping in....Credit to Harini for making her presence felt ...despite Karthik seeming to take away the cake ....The song ends with the lady rap ..and Karthik humming away the chords...BRILLIANT !! :) ...You really feel like applauding after listening to this piece of enlivening, energizing music :) ...

22. Chilipiga ( Orange )

This is another in the league of "SWEET" songs in the EXTRAORDINARY Harris-Karthik league ... Aval Ulaga Azhagiye, Oru Ooril, Uyire En Uyire ..and now this MASTERPIECE ...

This is largely a major chord based song ...that itself is the reason why it is STARKLY different from usual Harris songs ....It is AS SIMPLE AS IT CAN GET - A simple guitar rhythm...but an UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME tune ...

I wish I understood the lyrics to appreciate this song all the more ...but thanks to the original-remake syndrome ..I like this one more than Dhimu Dhimu from Engeyum Kadhal - its Tamil version ....

The first interlude is superb ...but THE MASTERSTROKE ...IS THE SMS BEEP SOUND...that comes along with the guitar ...it is JUST PERFECT !!!!!!!!! HOW ON EARTH DOES HJ COME UP WITH SUCH IDEAS ?!!!!!!! He is really the most fortunate man on earth to be gifted such ideas from the almighty! :) :) ....This is an ABSOLUTE MASTERCLASS PIECE OF MAGIC from Harris ...Nowhere do you know that its a Harris song ...except the Saxophone interlude.... which is Harris territory :)...

Words aren't sufficient to describe the beauty of this song ...Any music lover craves for such songs from Harris ...with minimum minor chords ..and maximum major chords ....This is SURELY one among the TOP ..when it comes to Harris-Karthik ..OUTSTANDING !!!

But the thing is ..I'm a Harris devotee :D ..so I liked his signature stuff more in Orange ..#1 is Rooba Rooba ..#2 is Nenu Nuvvantu ...and #3 for me ..is Chilipiga :) :) ...

23. Lolita ( Engeyum Kadhal )

This is one of the songs of Harris-Karthik that I dislike the most ...simply because it entirely has the hangover of Hasili Fisili ...same chords for the main lines...same rhythm...same singer...it feels all too familiar ...

The charanams are good though ...this song is completely SOAKED in romance ....makes for an awesome listen ..if you haven't heard Hasili Fisili ...

I've hardly heard this song many times ...so I really can't into details of this ..and I don't feel like :) because I don't like this song :)

24. Mun Andhi ( 7am Arivu )

This is EXACTLY the kinda song you'd wanna wake up to ...listen in the fresh morning :) ...

MASTERPIECE ...MASTERCLASS...all over again !! :) ....Another largely major-based song ...with Megha's awesome humming ...It is OH-SO-LOVELY ...OH-SO-SOOTHING from Harris ...HARDLY any traces of usual Harris stuff ...except the humming and the saxophone interlude ...those are again, Harris territory :) :) ....

Starts off with an awesome whistle...then comes Megha's humming in a Prasanna-like fashion ...& with the strike of a Santur I think, begins the song ...Karthik takes over and makes this song another piece of cake for him...except that he would've found this cake to be one of the most delicious ones :) ...One of the sweetest songs ever ...

One minor pitfall I think of is the chorus - ehe penne penne penne ...That tune is a bit like a compressed version of ARR's "Vazhayapatti Tamizhe" ...at least for the 3 lines :) ...I mean, if you slow down Vazhayapatti Tamizhe, ehe penne penne can so easily overlap with it ...same chords, lyric repetition ...etc etc
But yeah, like I said, this is, but, a very minor drawback of a masterpiece of magic :) ...which overshadows everything else ..when you listen ....The first interlude begins with a 2-time striking of a santur or Veena ..much like the starting of the Hindi song "Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga" from "1942 a love story" ...however, it happens just 4 times ...before Megha steps in to hum another super-awesome set of notes !!! Such complexity ...Kudos to Harris Jayaraj !

The charanam tunes are lovely ...and sweet ...and the absence of any minor chord progressons is a welcome relief ...But it is the beginning of 2nd charanam which is probably the most memorable moment of this song ...Karthik's improvisation before he sings "Andhi maalai"....is ABSOLUTE GOD-LEVEL STUFF !! :) ...

The beginning of the 2nd interlude ..the saxophone one ...is also unbelievable...I dunno how many of you have noticed this - especially the short, swift bass-chord change that happens before the sax begins - SUPER-AWESOME ...It really takes nothing less than a genius to come up with such unbelievable transitions...Bows and withdraws to HJ !! :)

Easily, again, one of HJ-Karthik's best songs ever !! :)

25. Yellai Lama (7am Arivu)

This happens to be the first HJ-Surya album where Karthik has sung 2 songs, not just one ....Maatraan being the second ...But this song really required his voice ...ONLY HE could've sung the lines like that ....Rhythm-wise, this one is a LITTLE similar to Kannum kannum nokia...but however, this one has one of the most unique bass ever !!!! :) :) ...which is what makes it the super-awesome song that it is ....I'm STILL tripping on this one :) :) ...even almost a year after its release !!

The best part of the song is - the bass ...simply super-awesome ..which makes the song unbelievably racy !!!

The 2nd best part of the song is ..the way Shruti Hassan finishes her lines ...OUT-OF-THE-WORLD !!!!!! WHAT A FIRE-POWERED VOICE !!!!!!  ...One can literally feel fire all around him when she screams "Gudhikkaaaaaaa !!" ....

The 3rd best is ...Karthik's falsetto tone ...in this song !! :) ...SUPERB !!!! HOW THE HELL DID THEY COME UP WITH SUCH AN IDEA !!!!!!!!???? .....INCREDIBLE !!!!

The song would've sounded less extraordinary, if it weren't for Karthik's lines .....it is just FANTASTIC - how he sings ONLY 4 in the song ....YET, the song SIMPLY would not have been the sensational chartbuster that it is ...without his 4 lines !! :) :) ...The bass variation after he sings "Sollaamale ..ullam thulluma" ...makes it JUST PERFECT !!!!!!!! :) :)

This song is one of my all-time favorite Harris Jayaraj songs ...it stirs up a kid-receiving-a-chocolate  level excitement in me each time it starts playing on my ipod :) :) :) :)..or whenever I see it on Sun Music ...I completely turn into a 5-year old kid whenever I come across this song :D :D :D :D  ....

This song is easily my pick from 7am Arivu ...BEAUTIFUL !! AN ABSOLUTE JOY RIDE !! :) ..NO MATTER WHAT MOOD I AM IN ...THIS SONG IS THE PERFECT JOSH-INJECTION ..FOR ME !! :) :) :) ....IT IS MEDICINE !!!!!

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS TABLET FOR THOSE WITH HAPPINESS DEFICIENCY !! :) :) :)

If my calculations are correct, this is the 25th song of Harris-Karthik !!! WOW !!! APT !!!! SUCH AN EXTRAORDINARY PIECE TO COMMEMORATE THIS FABULOUS, LEGENDARY COMBO ! :) :) :)...

26. Chaahoon Bhi ( Force )

I've described it in Memorable Combos 1 ... song #11 :) .....Throwing more light on Karthik's portions ...he makes his entry in the middle of the song ...soft, sweet and soothing .... no unusually high notes ...this song is meant to tranquilize you...and it just knocks you down :) :)....both interludes are saxophone interludes ...the first one is the soprano sax...which Harris uses in most of his songs ...the 2nd one is ..I'm not sure what it is ...but it is the one which he's used in the interludes of  "Anbe en anbe" from "Dhaam Dhoom"...

This was a perfect balm to the absolutely WOUNDED Bollywood music scene these days...:)

THIS IS A SONG WHICH ANYONE IN THE WORLD CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE !! :) ....MIND-NUMBING !! :)

27. Adada Oru Devathai ( Oru Kal Oru Kannadi )

This is a song from OKOK ...which I don't like ...my favorites from OKOK are ...Azhage azhage, Venaam Machan and Kadhal Oru Butterfly ...

I don't like this one because of the tune - very similar to a song by Westlife ...The chorus is awesomely rendered by Karthik ...lot of power in the voice ...but the tune particularly didn't strike a chord with my soul ...like most Harris songs ....the flute along with the chorus is nice ...

The charanam tune too, is similar to the charanam of "Oru Mugamo" from Bheema...Anyway, Karthik's improvisations towards the end ...are worth listening to ...and are notably wonderful :) :)...

A nice song, but not one of my favorite ones in the combo ...

28 & 29 - songs from Maatraan ...I've described them here :)

WHEW !!!!!! That completes what I call the best current male singer-music director combo in cinema :) :) ...

TOP ONES... I would say

TOP 3 - HIGHLY DIFFICULT. ..but I've to go with

1. Oru Maalai
2. Anjala
3. Unnaale Unnaale

TOP 5 - SLIGHTLY EASIER ....

4. Chilipiga
5. Mun Andhi

I HATE to exclude Hasili Fisili ...but if I HAVE to choose 5...then I'm afraid I HAVE to exclude it :( ...

Thank you readers ...for your patience ...hope you enjoyed this :)
Memorable combos will be back soon ...with the "Yuvan-Simbhu" combo :)

Cheers,
Ashwin..
