NADUNISI NAAYIGAL - 2 HOURS OF ASTOUNDING BRILLIANCE

Almost everyone I know has trashed this movie and said that it plainly & simply sucks...

I BEG TO DIFFER..:)..

Well..as you might have seen on my profiles everywhere...I'm a HUGE fan of Goutham Menon & his movies...But for Vaaranam Ayiram, I really LOVED every single movie of his
(like I said, even Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya ...was one which I HATED initially until I myself realized that the ending is IN FACT....AS REAL AS IT COULD'VE GOT...& that's what usually happens to a lot more guys than one :) )...

Anyways...the expectations were quite low for this movie....NO STAR POWER, NO CHART-BUSTING MUSIC...and FOR THE FIRST TIME - NO BACKGROUND SCORE AT ALL !! But yet...I, being a fan of Goutham...wanted to watch the movie...

It released on Friday...The weekend saw a lot of negative reviews about the movie all over the net...Except Behindwoods, I think everyone literally bashed the movie up....On Monday, the movie was there on Youtube...

I was very excited on Monday, as I had released my 3rd song and for the first time, it was a song in 2 languages :)...and THANKFULLY, by the grace of God ..and by the love of fans...both versions opened big :)...& to lot of acclaim :)....Obvious thanks to the singers, of course :)...Okay, I'm done with my round of boasting :P :P...

It was around afternoon when I started watching this movie...I had very low expectations of it, given what I heard and the reviews I read...But the end result was something spectacular & TOTALLY contrasting & contrary to whatever I had heard & expected...

So the story begins with the psycho (played EXTREMELY BRILLIANTLY well by Veera...SIMPLY SUPER-AWESOME & STUNNING...for a debut performance!!) ...murdering a police offer...A police officer, Vijay is on the lookout for him....then begins his narration of his story...One can make out from his style of narration itself, how mentally affected he is...

Then begins a flashback about his how a little boy, Samar, lost his mother at an early age...& how his dad was a womanizer...and sexually abuses him as well, right from the tender age of 8...Dialogues like "enakku ettu vayasu..appo enakku onnume theriyaadhu..aana ombodhu vayasukulla..adha pathi book ezdhara alavukku therinjukitten"...stand out!!
Brownie points++, Mr.Menon!

A nice lady neighbor in the form of Meenakshi amma is horrified when she discovers the truth about how this young schoolboy is being sexually harassed at home...and the kinda grossly disgusting environment he is growing up...The police arrive and catch his dad red-handed...But his dad shoots himself...survived by a homeless schoolboy who has nowhere to go...But Meenakshi amma takes charge of the boy as her local guardian and gives Samar a new identity as Veera....They live in harmony for 2 years...By this time, he is 13...and as he claims in his narration, he falls in love with Meenakshi amma...

However, the ghosts of the past continue to haunt him and traumatize him...He isn't able to sleep properly at night...He finds himself caught between trying to escape from the grossly disgustingly haunting memories of his childhood...& trying to control the arousal of his carnal instincts...On one such night, he is terrified & hugely traumatized by some recurring haunting images in his mind....and rushes to Meenakshi amma's bed...urging her to allow him to sleep next to her...and in this state of extreme paranoia, his carnal instincts take over ...and forcibly rapes Meenakshi amma...and confesses his love for her after raping her...

However, instead of staying away from him...or banishing him from the house...she lets him to stay with her and things do proceed as if nothing ever happened...I can say brownie points-- at this juncture...but after thinking twice, I will not :)...

Somehow, even in this age...There STILL ARE, unfortunately, women who spoil their lives by continuing to loyally & faithfully love their jerks...no matter what grossly intolerable thing they do to them....There still are women who JUST WON'T GIVE UP on continually doting on their creeps...acting as if they are totally oblivious of the creep's gross misdeeds...TRUE LOVE indeed, unfortunately for the wrong people!! :D ...
In short, there still are, unfortunately, women who take & tolerate shit...

Anyways, before my statements give away room for misinterpretation, lemme make myself clear - I have the greatest respect for women, I am in NO WAY whatsoever, trying to generalize...All I'm saying is THERE STILL, UNFORTUNATELY, ARE WOMEN who are like this...:)...

So, the idea of Meenakshi amma continuing to be normal with Veera...doesn't AMUSE me :)...Nothing unusual :)...Then, Meenakshi amma gets married to some college friend of hers...and on their nuptial night, this guy comes with a knife and brutally stabs her husband to death...He tells her - "naan thaan unakku ellame...ivan yen venum?" ...Again, brownie points++, Mr.Menon...WONDERFUL DEPICTION of an what an immature child's infatuation can lead to, if not addressed properly !!

*************SPOILER-ALERT*************

An accident happens which causes a candle to set the whole room ablaze...including Meenakshi amma...who survives for a little longer with complete burns...fully disfigured...She instructs the police to take Veera to her bungalow in Chennai...and not to file any charge against him..She instead tells them that her husband tried to sexually abuse her ..and Veera was the one who saved her...Again :)...unyielding love ..EVEN AT THIS POINT :) :)...

He tells her - "kavala padadheenga..doctor ta pesirken...hair transplant and reconstructive surgery pannita..ungalukku unga mugm tirupi kadakkum nu sonnaanga...appo neenga marubadiyum azhaga ayduvenga Meenakshi amma...don't worry.. ungalukku..naan irukken"..
The broken way in which Veera says this is BRILLIANT...ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY how an immature, innocent, infatuated child would say it...
They then move to Chennai where Meenakshi amma takes care of all the responsibilities of the house...This guy is 16-18 years...and a college-goer...

There begins a WONDERFUL journey of schizophrenia, hallucinations, split personality disorder...His sexual instincts just keep getting worse with time as he entices quite a few girls online, dates them, sleeps with them...while Meenakshi amma suddenly appears & stabs them brutally & then forcibly tears apart their hair ....While enticing his first victim...Sandhya, he mentions a SUPER-AWESOME dialogue: "ponnunga evalo arivaalingala irundhaalum...internet la sutthaama maatu maatu nu maatiduvaanga...avanga appa amma vandhu raatiri ponnu padchikittu irukka nu nenchukittu thoonga povaanga...aana raatiri full-a indha ponnunga seyyardhu...indha internet chatting thaan...appdi enakku kedacha ponnu thaan...Sandhya"
Brownie points++, Mr.Menon....THE PERILS OF DATING THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS...WONDERFULLY DEPICTED...

Sameera Reddy comes into the scene just before the interval....She happens to be Veera's high-school friend...whom he loved....He entices her as well (THE WAY HE DOES THIS IS OH-SO-AWESOME...THE INNOCENCE HE FEIGNS IS TOO GOOD), from Sathyam Cinemas...after killing her boyfriend...He hits her, stabs her and then takes her to his bungalow...and holds her in captive there...It is then revealed that he has held 2 more girls in captive...His watch dogs kill a police officer who was sent to rescue her...and also try to kill Sameera too...
Coherence with the title for the first time since Minnale - Brownie points++, Mr.Menon....:)

It is then revealed that Meenakshi amma doesn't exist...she was ACTUALLY dead after the accident...Veera has a split personality...as Samar & Veera....Samar is schizophrenic and has hallucinations of Meenakshi amma staying right over there...with him...and asking him to murder girls...and remove their hair...and Veera is aware of Samar's existence as a psycho...

Veera happens to be the soft-spoken, innocent personality....The last half an hour is an ABSOLUTE TREAT TO WATCH...One of THE MOST RIVETING CLIMAXES...
The police officer Vijay then comes to Sameera's rescue and catches him and frees the other girls too...Veera is then admitted in a mental health center...where it is shown that he falls for Samantha..(in a guest appearance...another mentally ill patient due to extreme depression) and she smiles back at him too... I guess this is possibly an indication that there might be sequel to this movie...

The movie ends in a Shankar-movie-like fashion....with a WONDERFUL MESSAGE FROM A DOCTOR....WHO SAYS THAT NOT ALL MENTALLY ILL PATIENTS ARE BAD PEOPLE...and that they need to be counselled instead of jailed...

HE ALSO GIVES A SHORT, 2-MINUTE DISCOURSE ABOUT CHILD ABUSE & ITS IMPACT...AND HOW IT IS EQUALLY TRAUMATIZING FOR BOYS...AS IT IS FOR GIRLS....AND WHAT SUCH TRAUMATIZED BOYS CAN GROW UP TO BECOME, IF NOT COUNSELLED AT THE INCEPTIVE STAGES OF SUCH TRAUMA...

**********SPOILERS OVER************

THIS IS BY FAR, ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN...
HATS OFF, GOUTHAM !!!! THIS IS NOT JUST A MOVIE...IT IS INDEED A SPECTACLE TO WATCH...

IF EVER YOU MAKE A SEQUEL TO THIS ONE, I WILL BE THE FIRST ONE TO WATCH IT...
  • TOP-NOTCH PERFORMANCES BY EVERYONE...VEERA, SAMEERA, SWAPNA...NOT A SINGLE CHARACTER WAS WASTED...OF COURSE, VEERA STANDS OUT...WITH FLYING COLORS...HIS PERFORMANCE IS AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT TO WATCH
  • WONDERFUL DIRECTION, CINEMATOGRAPHY & EDITING....NOT A SINGLE SCENE FELT UNNECESSARY...
  • BRILLIANT CHARACTERIZATION...OF SAMAR, VEERA AND OTHERS....
  • NO BACKGROUND SCORE & MUSIC - I CAN'T IMAGINE SONGS IN THIS MOVIE!! Even the best of English psycho thrillers have background music... GOUTHAM, HATS OFF AGAIN....A PSYCHO THRILLER WITHOUT HAUNTING BACKGROUND MUSIC AND YET, HUGELY EFFECTIVE?? AWESOME!!!!!!
  • NOT MUCH ENGLISH IN THE MOVIE...GOUTHAM HAS CUT DOWN ON UNNECESSARY ENGLISH DIALOGUES...
  • A LITTLE BIT OF INSPIRATION FROM ANNIYAN & CHELLAME IS SEEN...BUT THAT'S EXCUSABLE...
  • THE MOVIE IS IN TAMIL....BUT IT IS NOT A TAMIL MOVIE...FOR SURE....TAMIL CINEMA HAS NEVER SEEN A MOVIE OF THIS GENRE - SCHIZOPHRENIA, HALLUCINATIONS ETC...SUPER-AWESOME NOVELTY FROM GOUTHAM!!
  • COMPARING TO SIGAPPU ROJAKKAL IS OUT OF QUESTION...BOTH ARE PSYCHO THRILLERS....BUT THIS ONE IS WAY MORE INTENSE & HARDCORE...
  • WONDERFUL CAMERAWORK...SOME SCENES HAVE REALLY BEEN SHOT BRILLIANTLY
IN SHORT....THIS FILM HAS ALL THE INGREDIENTS OF AN ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING HOLLYWOOD PSYCHO THRILLER...TO BOAST OF ....
But unfortunately, since it is a Tamil film...it is going to BOMB...the cash registers aren't gonna ring...People are gonna dismiss it as a "mokkai" movie...

Goutham, you really deserve to go to Hollywood....I mean, at least for such BRILLIANT, EXTRA-ORDINARY, SUPER-AWESOMELY AMAZING movies...Tamil Cinema ain't the place :)....

Anyways, I, as a Tamilian, am very proud to see a movie like this being churned out in Tamil Cinema....KUDOS TO YOUR GUTS..for going ahead with your HARDCORE & INTENSE DEPICTION OF A PSYCHO...caring 2 hoots for the mentality of the Tamil audience...

and at least in my eyes, you've SUCCEEDED STUPENDOUSLY, BIG-TIME!!!!! This will go down in my book as ..I wouldn't say one of the best movies I've seen...I'd rather say...One of THE BEST EXPERIENCES I've had..:)...

God bless you, Goutham...may you keep making a lot more movies like these...and here's wishing Veera a very bright future...He's really gonna give the top stars a run for their money...

MY VERDICT: 5/5....A MUST-WATCH ...(with the mindset that it's a psycho movie...don't expect entertainment/masala/candy-floss romance)...

First, I must tell you know how to judge a Goutham Menon movie. It is my openion too that Vaaranam Aayiram is'nt the best of Menon.
But Nandunisi Naaygal was too good to criticize. I really am sorry for those who couldn't find this movie to be a good one....
