The "SUPER" experience of watching an Uppi movie in a local theater

To Kannadigas, this man needs NO introduction :) ..
For the rest of the world, let's just say that this guy is CERTAINLY THE MOST CREATIVE GUY AND PRECIOUS TALENT Sandalwood (The Kannada film industry) has...

Note - When I say "Uppi's movies" in this post, I mean, movies which Uppi has scripted, directed, acted in, written lyrics & sung songs for...:)
Movies which he's just acted in, aren't great.
Like I mentioned in the previous post, I am always in awe of multi-talented people :)..

I'm not too much into Kannada films. Everyone knows the substandard quality of Kannada films. However, there's one Kannadiga whom EVERYONE will find entertaining FOR SURE - Uppi :). I'm no exception :).
The first time I came to know about Upendra a.k.a Uppi was during my school days. Not a single day passed without our van driver playing songs of A, Swastik, Upendra etc. Listening to and singing these songs everyday in the school van kinda made me look forward to van journeys to & from school more than school itself :D.

However, I never watched any of his movies until much later i.e.
"A" was the first movie of his which I watched sometime during engineering. It was highly entertaining, to say the least. Upendra has extracted THE BEST out of Gurukiran, music-wise.
The songs of A & Upendra, were, are & shall always be UNPARALLELED CULT CLASSICS....
There have NEVER BEEN SONGS LIKE THESE...in ANY movie from ANY other industry....
THEY'RE SIMPLY TOO UNIQUE AND TOO AWESOME! :) .....THESE SONGS DEFINE AND EPITOMIZE "PUNCH"...No other songs have this kind of a PUNCH which Uppi's songs have...HATS OFF to UPPI for AWESOME lyrics and singing...and to Gurukiran for doing PERFECT JUSTICE to Uppi's talent....

I have NEVER seen SUCH A FAN FRENZY for any other actor of Uppi's generation in any other industry. I repeat, Uppi's generation. I know the fan bases of Dr.Rajkumar, Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan etc cannot be paralleled. But for a man who has just crossed 40, to have SUCH AN INCREDIBLY AMAZING FAN FOLLOWING....HATS OFF !!!

The ONLY PERSON who has a style of his own, after Rajni, is Uppi....Most other "mass-heroes" of today merely imitate Rajni's mannerisms (Ilaya Thalai vali in particular)....But Uppi is PURE GOLD...SHEER BRILLIANCE...

He's the one who sets the standards for Kannadigas to follow when it comes to style and mannerisms....Tell me one single Kannadiga of my generation who DOES NOT know Uppi's mass? No one can ever forget the way Uppi's hairstyle became A RAGE after the release of "A". It spread like a forest fire. Everyone wanted to look like Uppi. Well, even now, everyone wants to look like him :). Every Kannadiga on the streets was mouthing Uppi's dialogues. That was all I had known about Uppi, until of course when I recently heard about some classics like "Tharle Nan Maga", which was Uppi's first movie, Kashinath's "Ajagajantara" where Uppi plays a cameo.

I've always wanted to see an Uppi movie in theater. I wasn't able to watch A and Upendra in theatre. However, after a decade, Uppi's back with his latest offering - "SUPER". Well, for a start, the film, technically has no name, it is just the "super" symbol, as shown in the image below.

Straightaway, that should tell you, what a STARK difference from the rest, the man has got!
Anyway, I didn't wanna miss watching an Uppi movie in theater this time around too. Shayan and I had made a pact to watch this upon release, when I visited him in Mountain View itself, sometime in July. We decided we weren't gonna miss this one and we didn't. :)

Shayan landed in Bangalore just yesterday and what do I make him do the very next day, irrespective of whether he's out of jet-lag or not? - watch Super with me! :D.....
He was more than game for the plan. I insisted that we watch it in Sagar theater instead of a multiplex (You guys must be knowing my animosity towards multiplexes by now if you've read my earlier posts). More so, when it is an Uppi movie, a movie by the undisputed superstar of Kannada cinema, there's NO WAY you can watch it elsewhere :). I selected Sagar theater, as it was equidistant for us and of course, it's an awesome theater (I still remember watching Kaante with Tejaswi many years ago, at this place). He reached before me and found out that the balcony was full! We had to go for the middle class - well, it's an uppi movie, the lower, the merrier :). Methinks Gandhi class would've been IDEAL to watch Subhash Chandra Gandhi :)...What say, guys? :)

We cursed ourselves for not having the ability to whistle. However, we decided that we would contribute to our fullest extent, in terms of howling and screaming :D :D. Well, I've seen people whistling themselves out for Rajni movies in Bangalore. However, to see people cheering and applauding a HERO from THEIR OWN land a.k.a Uppi ...is something TOO AWESOME, NOT-TO-BE-MISSED and too endearing :).

*SPOILER ALERT*

Random whistles were heard until the censor certificate appeared - the whistles hit the roof!! Shayan and I started our contribution there, by howling. The movie started off on an impressive note, just like Hollywood movies. It showcased the history of India until of course it fast-forwarded to 2030. Now, there have been a LOT of movies with social messages about the reformation of India. However, all that has been shown till now is people fighting to reform. This movie begins with a picture of India in 2030 - Mysore International Airport, Bangalore having a skyline like Chicago behind the Vidhana Soudha, foreigners flocking to India even for menial jobs, Rupee being far superior to pounds and dollars, Indian culture and Kannada being respected, in one sentence - India being a clean, problem-free heaven and THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD. HATS OFF TO UPPI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOWS AND WITHDRAWS !!! UNTIL NOW, HAS ANY FILM-MAKER EVER THOUGHT ABOUT PROJECTING INDIA IN SUCH A WAY??? ( Ignore the current reality ...has anyone EVER, EVER THOUGHT OF SUCH AN INDIA? ). We have India being shown as a slum country in Slumdog Millionaire and that went on to win the Oscars. This, sadly, won't be recognized all that much, though it deserves WAYYYY LOT MORE!!! THAT'S Uppi's BRILLIANCE AND INCREDIBLE CREATIVITY SPEAKING FOR YOU....RIGHT AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE!!
A PICTURE SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS - I'm hoping that THIS VERY PICTURE itself will linger in the minds of Indians for a while and will have Indians LONGING for an India like that...and will stir them up a little ...

Opening credits - hilarious!! again, Uppi's creativity just bleeds and oozes through such things :)...
Uppi's entry scene - NO WORDS!!!!! It's better than any Rajni intro I've seen till now! :)...I was left open-mouthed and bereft of speech on seeing his entry! Of course, decibel levels of whistles kept on scaling new peaks for this scene :)....Shayan and I howled the loudest for this one :D
Nayantara - SUPER HOT !! The 2nd incentive for me to see the film! Shayan and I were jollu-vuttufying uncontrollably :P....looks apart, she's acted really well.......So sad that she's gonna quit acting soon :( :(...
Sadhu Kokila - without overacting, this time he's really good and funny to watch on screen :)....the "Chaddi Brothers" are quite hilarious :D
Songs - Though not up to Gurukiran's standards, V Harikrishna has done an EXCELLENT and SENSATIONAL job and has lived up to the expectations of making music for an Uppi film. "Kaayi kaayi" and "Sikkapatte Ishtapatte" are SUPER-AWESOME!!!!!!! Whistles accompanying the songs in the theater just add to the awesomeness! Needless to say, Uppi's picturization, singing and lyrics are also too good!
Dialogues by Uppi are SIMPLY CLASSIC!! Another tributary of creativity that flows from the river called Upendra :)...

The way the current situation in India, particularly Karnataka, has been shown is HIGHLY COMMENDABLE AND LAUDABLE.....be it the dirty politics (hats off to the guy who acted as the CM), corruption, crime, media maligning, dirtiness of the country......Uppi's satiric way of looking at things is just TOO DAMN GOOD!!!

The formula he uses to reform India is too awesome - Indians will do anything for money...Uppi has the money...he pays them money to do good for the country....He succeeds in employing rowdies to do good for the state....

BUT THE AWESOMEST AND MOST MEANINGFUL PART OF THE MOVIE - the ending...
He becomes the CM...chief minister.....but calls himself "Common Man".....and indeed, lives like one....HATS OFF!!!!! Where do we see ministers living for people these days??
He sells the government!! :D.....and he sells all parts of the city to people living in those parts....They take care of those parts well, since it is "theirs" now....and this way, Bangalore, in 2030, becomes like how it is shown at the beginning of the movie - A DREAM LAND...

WHAT A HARD, SHARP, YET MOST MEANINGFUL AND MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF INDIA....IT JUST RIPS THROUGH YOUR HEART -
DO NOT THINK AS IF YOUR COUNTRY BELONGS TO THE GOVERNMENT, IT BELONGS TO YOU!! TAKE CARE OF YOUR COUNTRY JUST LIKE HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR HOME....

*SPOILERS OVER*

I REALLY LOVED THE MOVIE!!! It is EASILY without doubt, the BEST, most HIGH QUALITY Kannada movie I've ever seen....Of course, it does have its own pitfalls but who cares when the message and visuals of the movie overshadow everything else and slap your face hard?!

Uppi's movies, though hanging quite a bit on the lewd and offensive side, PROJECT REALITY IN THE SHARPEST WAY POSSIBLE :)......

Uppi COULD NOT HAVE MADE UP A BETTER LAUNCH VEHICLE ...for his entry into politics....
Hope he really implements in reality, what he has shown in this movie..:)...

Watching an Uppi movie in theater, was indeed a real memorable "SUPER" experience :)
Shayan and I did have a super time :)
Jai Uppi !! You're THE UNDISPUTED PRIDE of Kannada Cinema today!! Hope you continue to make wonderful movies!
Cheers,
Ashwin.
